On Saturday we took a tour around the island (we are on Tutuila. 5 islands make up American Samoa.) It was incredible. We were in awe with each curve in the road. It is still hard to believe that this will be our everyday life for a year. However, paradise does come with its own drawbacks. There are several stray/wild dogs roaming around the island, and some are very aggressive. (remedy: carry a big stick, and sometimes pretending to pick up a rock will make them back off. You can also try saying "Halu!" which means go away.) Another thing is the trash that is everywhere. Recycling doesn't exist here, and it's sad to look out towards the ocean and see trash all along the road and in the parks.
Yesterday we hiked up to Blunt's Point, a historical landmark (yay!) that was the Naval gun site during WWII. There are two cannons up there that helped to protect the harbor. While up there, we talked about culture shock, and how to deal with it. I know it will happen to all of us sooner or later, if it hasn't already!
Starting to get anxious for the start of school which is August 8. (Yes, that is the day after my birthday! Ah! The 7th is also Wes and Cat's anniversary, they are the married couple among our group.)

ReplyDeleteYour dad sent me your blog so I could keep up with your experience. Sounds like life in American Samoa is in full swing. We all miss you and be safe. If possible latch on to one of the really nice football helmets for me.I want to be an American Somoan Football player for Halloween in 2012. Just thinking ahead.
